what’s renewable petroleum?

I have a composting bin in my basement.  I give my worms food scraps and they turn my food scraps into incredible fertilizer that I can use to grow food.   For me, that’s been pretty exciting, however, I’ve just learned of technology that can now take waste products like wood shavings, straw, and pretty much any organic waste product that can be turned into sugars when broken down (which is a lot of things) and when it’s fed to genetically modified bacteria, it turns these waste products into something that’s been in the news a lot lately – black gold, otherwise known as renewable petroleum.  And this stuff is pretty much ready to be poured into a gas tank as soon as it’s produced eliminating the expensive and energy intensive refining process.
