As far as retailers are concerned gift cards are nothing new. The only thing that has changed is that instead of the older gift certificates stores now sell cards that can be electronically loaded with a fixed value. But that is not the only thing that has changed. The old way of giving the certificates was to put it in a envelope or greeting card.
