Injuries
A mortality of 55.9 percent has been reported fro abdominal wounds with all types of duodenal injury. Burrus et al. have reported a series of 86 duodenal injuries with a total mortality of 26 percent.Mortality rates for duodenal injuries have steadily decreased and are directly proportional to the number and severity of associated injuries as well as the time interval between injury and treatment. Lucas reported a mortality rate of 40 percent in those patients who were not operated upon in the first 24 hours after injury, as contrasted to a mortality rate of only 11 percent among the patients operated upon within less than 24 hours.
