A good friend of mine was mugged and robbed a few years ago.  I remember getting the call that it had happened and I immediately felt a little scared for my own safety.  I did some research and settled up getting a mini stun gun.  My wife was not immediately happy with my decision to get it, but within a few weeks, she started to like the idea that I was safer carrying one of them around.  I have never regretted the decision and I take it everywhere I go now especially when I am walking around urban locations in cities where I have never been before.
