The Redbone Coonhound: Hunter and Family Friend
The Redbone Coonhound, which is thought to be a mix between the Irish Setter and the Bloodhound, is the only solid-colored hound. These types of dogs have a deep reddish coloring; however, some of these hounds may have small white markings on the feet and/or chest. Their muzzle is always black. These hounds have webbed feet to aid them when in the water, which most greatly enjoy. The coat is short and coarse and their skin is dark pink in color. The Redbone is a skilled tracker and is mainly used for hunting raccoon. They can also be used to hunt other animals, such as bear and bobcat. The temperament of the Redbone makes it an ideal family pet, and makes dog training a breeze. They are good with children and are loyal to their family. If cats are in the household, Redbones need to be taught at an early age that they are not to be considered game.
