Fish oil is a great additive to his daily feeding. Fish oil can help soothe the skin and decrease the production of histamine, reducing allergic behaviors and reactions within the body. If your dog ranges in between 30 and 45 pounds, add ¼ teaspoon of fish oil into his dish. This is an average dose and may need to be adjusted to compensate for your dog’s natural reaction to the oil.For larger or smaller dogs, simply add or subtract a few drops to find the amount that works well for your dog. Some dogs can tolerate a high dose and their humans might mix as much as 2 tablespoons into the food. Other dogs show signs of sensitive bowels and need only a few droplets in order to help their skin condition.Use caution if you are considering giving your dog an over the counter allergy medication. These medications are known for causing drowsiness. The non–drowsy formulas tend to cause hyperactivity. Some skin allergies in dogs to not react positively to allergy medication. While many humans tend to give these to their dog to help deal with dog skin allergies, never dispense medication to your dog without running it by your vet. You will need to know how to alter the dose properly for your dog’s needs.
