What is the use of a spool backing

That is really a very technical term. The spool is something in a reel that you reel in the line. I learn all this while doing a fly fishing trip in alaska. What happened was I was simply using a reel, do not know anything about spool backing and stuff. So, the line was packed tightly with a lot of coils. You would not find anything wrong with the spool until you cast the line and you would find them spinning in a cork screw and even doing a dougnut. Something you do not want while fly fishing…
