Driving the Seward Highway
If you mention to most people that a highway is a must see in state, they would probably look at you like you were crazy, unless it was Route 66 of course. However, the Seward Highway in Alaska is definitely a must see. The highway features amazing vistas and if you’re driving from Anchorage to Seward, your ultimate destination is the Portage Glacier at mile marker 78 for the 5.5 mile spur road. Along the highway there are several amazing natural sites to see. For instance, at mile marker 110 is Beluga Point. When the tide is right and the salmon is running, you can often see families of Beluga whales off of the point. Or, at mile marker 106, you might have the opportunity to see Dall sheep. Each year the sheep have become braver and braver, so if there are cars parked at mile marker 106, you can usually bet the sheep are out and about. At mile marker 79, you’ll find the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. This is a non-profit organization that provides homes to wild animals that have been orphaned, such as deer, bears, moose, elk and more.
